Working Memory Training as Pretreatment Adjunct to Smoking Cessation

The Dole building on a sunny summer day with blue sky and clouds.

The overarching aim of the proposed project is to conduct a pilot RCT (N = 60) to examine the preliminary feasibility and efficacy of a computerized working memory training program as a pretreatment adjunct to a smoking cessation program (provided by the Kansas Tobacco quitline, which includes free behavioral counseling and nicotine replacement therapies). Participants will be randomized to receive the working memory training plus the smoking cessation program or a control training condition plus the smoking cessation program. Participants will be randomized to complete a qualitative interview aimed at learning about the perceived feasibility, efficacy, and acceptability of the working memory training, study procedures and its outcomes.
