Help KU Study How the Brain and Body Communicate 

The Laboratory of Affective Sensory Research (LASR) at the University of Kansas is working to learn how the brain and the digestive system work together.

The Laboratory of Affective Sensory Research (LASR) at the University of Kansas is conducting a research study to understand how the brain and body communicate, and how this may differ between autistic and non-autistic individuals. 

We are seekingboth autistic and non-autistic participants. Your involvement can help advance scientific knowledge and improve understanding of neurodevelopmental differences.

We Have Two Study Opportunities Available!

Study 1: Individuals Ages 15–21  

Participation includes:

  • Attending 1 lab visit (2hrs)
  • Completing questionnaires about sensory experiences and medical history
  • Sessions using electrodes to measure brain activity (EEG), heart activity (ECG), and stomach activity (EGG)

Participants will receive $60  for this single visit, with the option to be screened for the full study described below. For participants under 18, compensation will be provided to a parent or guardian. 

Study 2: Individuals Ages 4–45

Participation includes:

  • Attending 5 lab visits (between 2 to 4 hours each)
  • Behavioral assessments and sensory testing
  • Sessions using electrodes to measure brain (EEG), heart (ECG), and stomach activity (EGG)
  • An MRI scan used to take detailed pictures of brain structure

Participants are compensated for each study visit, with total compensation of up to $400 for completing all five visits. For participants under 18, compensation will be provided to a parent or guardian.
