Artificial Intelligence Scored Composition to Improve Outcomes for Written Expression

Project AI SCORE supports struggling writers by instantly scoring writing for content, organization, and style, while providing students and teachers with immediate, personalized feedback, visual insights, and actionable next steps.

AI SCORE addresses limited writing competency among middle school students (Grades 5-9) with Learning Disabilities using an effective Al-supported digital progress monitoring tool to improve student writing outcomes. Components of the project include (a) Al supported progress monitoring (PM) program meant for student use, (b) the development of a teacher/family member tool that fosters students' application of writing feedback and instruction gained from the Al PM system to the school or home setting, (c) teacher and family members use of student data on writing competency to further direct writing skill development, and (d) the development of a process to sustain the implementation of the Al PM system by educators, parents, and students with learning disabilities.

The AI SCORE Informative Writing Rubric is a researcher-designed tool focused on the qualitative aspects of writing. The creation process involved both AI analysis and collaboration with writing experts. AI analyzed four trusted writing rubrics to draft a version, which was then refined with feedback from expert researchers to ensure each construct was clearly defined and measurable. Finally, the AI scoring system uses this rubric to evaluate student writing on content, organization, and style, with each area scored on a scale from one to six.

AI SCORE keeps teachers as the "human in the loop" by ensuring they remain the final authority in the classroom. Teachers were involved from the start, co-creating writing prompts and evaluating the system's feedback before its launch. Now, they continue to improve the AI's accuracy in real time by rating its feedback with a simple thumbs up or thumbs down.
AI Score protects student data using zero-knowledge encryption, a process that allows it to gain valuable insights by confirming statistical patterns without ever seeing a single name. This means a school's raw data remains secure, as researchers only receive de-identified, encrypted information. This approach protects students while building a robust research base that can advance writing instruction for every learner.
Progress monitoring is a structured way to track a student's writing progress by regularly collecting data from short, focused tasks to guide instructional decisions. AI SCORE automates this process by automatically scoring both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of student writing. This gives teachers a dashboard to track progress and empowers students by making their growth visible through graphs and feedback.
